Over the
years, we have seen an increase
in advertising for various acid
reflux medications. First, we
saw this increase in
prescription medications and
then we watched the government
approve many drugs for over the
counter purchase. Yet, we don't
often hear about how simple
dietary changes can help many
people alleviate acid reflux
symptoms. With rising health
care costs, this form of
treatment needs to be
emphasized as it can be very
beneficial in reducing, if not
eliminating,
symptoms.
GERD foods fall into one of
three categories. There are
foods you can eat without
limits, foods that you can eat
occasionally, and foods that
should be avoided. This list
may vary somewhat for each
individual person, but it is a
good jumping off point. One
important thing to remember is
that dietary changes won't
necessarily "cure" your acid
reflux, but they can make it
more manageable without
medications.
Fruits and vegetables are
beneficial to any diet, but can
be especially helpful for those
suffering from GERD. Most
fruits and vegetables are safe
to eat within reason, but there
are a few GERD foods that must
be avoided in order to keep
symptoms at bay. Tomatoes and
tomato based food will often
bring on symptoms, as will
cooked and raw onions. Citrus
fruits and juices should be
used minimally. Look for low
acid versions of such favorites
as orange juice. Potatoes,
unless they are baked, are a
frequent cause of heartburn and
nausea for those with acid
reflux so they should be
avoided if at all possible.
Enjoy a diet of apples,
bananas, broccoli, carrots and
peas, amongst many others,
without suffering the effects
of acid
reflux.
Meat is an essential part of
any meal for a lot of people.
Yet, those suffering from acid
reflux have to choose cuts of
meat very carefully.
By choosing wisely, acid
reflux symptoms can be
minimized or avoided
altogether. Always choose low
fat cuts of meat such as fish,
lean ground beef or skinless
chicken. Also, make sure to
include low fat yogurt and milk
in your diet to meet your daily
needs. Egg substitutes and egg
whites can also be eaten
within
reason.
GERD foods that must be avoided
include such things as
caffeinated and carbonated
drinks along with any form of
alcohol. Certain foods are know
to be triggers for most GERD
sufferers. These include
chocolate, peppermint and fatty
foods. By paying attention to
your diet, you can reduce, and
possibly eliminate, acid reflux
symptoms without the use of
medication.
