Foods You Should Avoid
When You Have Acid Reflux
If you suffer from acid reflux you may want
to avoid the following:
- Tomatoes and tomato-based foods
- Coffee
- Tea
- Carbonated Beverages
- Fried Foods
- Fatty Foods
- Chocolate
One of the best known causes of acid reflux and indigestion are
tomatoes and tomato-based foods. Tomato based foods can be
difficult to avoid but are acidic and know to cause the
esophageal sphincter to weaken. The should be avoided whenever
possible.
Another food that is high on the list is Caffeine. Yes, even
your morning coffee or tea could result in painful reflux. Be
carful with carbonated beverages as well. Many of these
beverages are just not so easy to give up. Be careful, if you
must drink coffee, tea or soda do so in moderation and cut back
when you feel reflux coming on.
Some other foods that may be common in your diet are fried
foods, fatty foods, and even chocolate. Taking longer to digest
than other foods, fried and fatty foods sit in the stomach
longer. This will put added pressure on the stomach which could
also put pressure on the esophageal sphincter. As hard as it
may be to adjust you diet it just my be the best way you can
control over your acid reflux causes.
Here are a couple of things
you can do today to prevent an acid reflux flair
up:
- Do not Overeat. Eating too
much puts pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter.
- Do not eat within two to three hours before
lying down. Eating close to bedtime will
create a situation where the contents of the stomach will
rise up. When this happens you may find comfort in raising
your head or using a wedge pillow.
Once acid reflux causes are known it will be much easier to
prevent them from occurring. Monitor the foods you eat, how
much and when you eat them and it can make a noticeable
difference in preventing it from reoccurring. Learning what
food causes acid reflux is your first line of defence in
fighting this battle.
