Foods You Should Avoid When You Have Acid Reflux


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


If you suffer from acid reflux you may want to avoid the following:

  • Tomatoes and tomato-based foods
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Carbonated Beverages
  • Fried Foods
  • Fatty Foods
  • Chocolate


One of the best known causes of acid reflux and indigestion are tomatoes and tomato-based foods. Tomato based foods can be difficult to avoid but are acidic and know to cause the esophageal sphincter to weaken. The should be avoided whenever possible.

Another food that is high on the list is Caffeine. Yes, even your morning coffee or tea could result in painful reflux. Be carful with carbonated beverages as well. Many of these beverages are just not so easy to give up. Be careful, if you must drink coffee, tea or soda do so in moderation and cut back when you feel reflux coming on.

Some other foods that may be common in your diet are fried foods, fatty foods, and even chocolate. Taking longer to digest than other foods, fried and fatty foods sit in the stomach longer. This will put added pressure on the stomach which could also put pressure on the esophageal sphincter. As hard as it may be to adjust you diet it just my be the best way you can control over your acid reflux causes.

Here are a couple of things you can do today to prevent an acid reflux flair up:

  1. Do not Overeat. Eating too much puts pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter.
  2. Do not eat within two to three hours before lying down. Eating close to bedtime will create a situation where the contents of the stomach will rise up. When this happens you may find comfort in raising your head or using a wedge pillow.

Once acid reflux causes are known it will be much easier to prevent them from occurring. Monitor the foods you eat, how much and when you eat them and it can make a noticeable difference in preventing it from reoccurring. Learning what food causes acid reflux is your first line of defence in fighting this battle.
